XENARTHRA

The Xenarthra clade includes animals such as armadillos, anteaters and sloths that are indigenous to the American continent and have powerful claws. In the past, this group was known as “toothless” and also included the pangolin (Pholidota) and aardvark (Tubulidentata). They are terrestrial or arboreal animals of dense and open forests, savannas and grasslands.  This clade’s name comes from the distinctive nature of the vertebrae in these animals. They have additional apophyses and joints in their posterior dorsal and lumbar vertebrae. The Xenarthra group is divided into two orders: Cingulata and Pilosa.
